Songhai, Humburi of Burkina Faso
The Songhai state has existed in one form or another for over a thousand years, and was a large African empire at one time. The first great king of Songhai was Sonni Ali. Ali was a Muslim like the Mali kings before him, but did not impose Islamic policy on non-Islamic peoples. Instead, he allowed and acknowledged the observance of traditional African religion and practices. Even though Islam introduced new elements to the Songhai culture, it left the underlying framework of custom and tradition virtually untouched.
The patriarchal society of the Songhai, along with its history, customs, and traditions, has been virtually untouched for centuries, eluding change and building barriers to Christian witness.
Christian workers are needed to minister physically and materially to the Songhai, as well as spiritually. Bridges of trust and friendship are necessary.
Pray for the followers of Christ among the Songhai people, that they will find each other in order to fellowship together. Pray they will experience Christ's love that surpasses knowledge.
Pray the Songhai community will be able to provide for their families and for adequate rain, clean water and sufficient food. Pray for schooling for their children.
"The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever." Revelation 11:15
