Huayao Tai of China
The Huayao Tai are historically part of the great and ancient Tai race. One writer claimed that the Tai predate even the Chinese. Huayao Tai women are instantly recognizable by their huge circular hats. They also carry with them a small bamboo basket, containing needle and thread, cosmetics, or food. The Huayao Tai practice a mixture of Theravada Buddhism and animism. "Animism in its Tai form ranges from the worship of natural forces to include the practice of shamanism, sorcery and black magic."
To change one's world view drastically is not easy. Buddhism mixed with animism is a very different worldview than the worldview of the informed Christian.
Perhaps Han Chinese Christians will be led by the Lord's Spirit to carry the good news of Jesus to the Huayao Tai people. Pray for this to occur.
A small number of Huayao Tai believers live in Mengyang County. In recent years evangelists have been active among them, establishing several house churches. Pray for these believers. Few Huayao Tai outside of Mengyang have heard of Christ.
Pray that the Huayao Tai may soon hear accurately of Jesus. Pray that each individual capable of making a decision may hear in his or her mother tongue. Pray for several exposures to the good news of Christ, using different formats and media.
"Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples. For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised." 1 Chronicles 16:24-25
