In 1350, sailors saw a glimpse of light around an island in South East Asia and named it Kawi. It was a fitting name as it meant, "having the sunlight." Six hundred years later, "Kawi" officially became an island of the Republic of Indonesia. Now named Bawean, the island is home to the Bawean people. Bawean also live in the neighboring country of Malaysia. The Bawean are majority Sunni Muslims with some influence from traditional local beliefs. Many grow rice, maize and coconuts for a living.
Sharing the gospel with Muslims in Malaysia is very challenging; the government equates focusing on Christ as lord with "converting" out of Islam.
Many Bawean people live in Singapore, where there is freedom of religion. Perhaps Christ followers can reach out to the Bawean in Singapore first, and new Bawean believers can take Christ to their people in Malaysia and Indonesia.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life." John 5:24
Pray that today’s people group listens to the God’s message and believes in the good news of their salvation.
Pray that the love of Christ would be experienced and embraced by the Bawean people. Pray that the Bawean would understand they can be adopted into the kingdom of light. Pray for believers in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore to shine Christ's light to those around them. Pray that there would be a movement to Christ among the Bawean.
