Beldar (Hindu traditions) in India

The Beldar are a Hindu people who live across many regions of India. The word Beldar is derived from two words; "bel" meaning a digging instrument, and "dar" referring to the person who handles it. They are associated with digging and carrying soil in the context of agriculture. There are also Beldars who are engaged in animal husbandry, small business, industrial work, and unskilled labor. The Beldar people have their own folk songs and folk-tales. They speak in the Baghelkandi dialect of Kannada at home, and Hindi with outsiders.

Ministry Obstacles

The Beldar belong to the fourth caste in Hinduism, the Shudras. Since many Beldar cannot read or write, so the gospel must be presented to them in oral and visual form.

Outreach Ideas

Churches exist in the area of south India where most of the Beldar live. Believers can share the blessings of knowing Christ with them.

Scripture Focus

"The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’"  Matthew 25:21

Scripture Prayer

Pray that many in this people group become good and faithful servants of the Master and celebrate with Him in the coming kingdom.

Prayer Focus

There is a tiny group of Beldar who have become believers. Pray that their number grows and that these believers are trained to share the gospel with their community members. * Pray for Indian believers to produce stories and songs in the Beldar dialect that will lead them to seek Jesus Christ. * Pray for them to have easy access to materials in the Hindi and Kannada languages. * Pray that God opens their hearts to the truth of God's Word.
