Traditionally Barwalas have worked as village watchmen and messengers, overseeing the work of coolies, bearing torches, and carrying palanquins at weddings. Others manufactured mats and winnowing fans. They are considered to be from a low caste, meaning that they have very little influence or power. By the beginning of the 20th century, many were agricultural laborers working for the more prestigious Rajputs. Today most of the Muslim Barwala people of Pakistan are engaged in agriculture or as unskilled laborers. The Barwalas live mainly in nuclear households. The oldest son becomes the head of the household after the father dies.
These are Muslims who are deeply affected by the caste system which has affected all peoples in Pakistan. Not only are they prevented from seeking a savior rather than "obeying the law" to earn salvation, but their identity is warped by the caste system.
Believers can spend a full year of regular prayer for this Muslim people group before going to them with the message that Jesus saves sinners.
"Their descendants will be known among the nations and their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will acknowledge that they are a people the Lord has blessed." Isaiah 61:9
Pray that those who live near today’s people group will want their spiritual blessings after they submit to the Lord Almighty.
Pray that Barwala followers of Christ will be filled with the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit so they can show their neighbors what Jesus can do in someone's life. * Pray that the Barwala peoples will have an intense hunger for spiritual truth that will lead them to Jesus Christ. * Pray that the Lord will thrust out workers to the Barwala people. Pray that these workers will be equipped with the power and fruit of the Holy Spirit in their lives. * Pray for the Lord to pave the way for a disciple-making movement to flourish among the Barwala people of Pakistan.
