Shaikhs often are prominent in business and respected in religious matters. Shaikh in Arabic is translated as “elder,” denoting that they have wisdom, an honor that they eagerly accept. Originally many were converts from Hindu castes. Shaikhs can be found living in the capital city of Kathmandu and the Rampur Region of Nepal. Nepali is their primary language. The Koran has been translated into Nepali and many Shaikhs are reading it.
Muslims, especially those with good standing in their religious communities, seek to please Allah through their works. They are often taught that the Bible is inaccurate, and that only the Koran can be trusted.
There has been much ministry activity among the Shaikhs in India, but few works in Nepal. Pray that this largest group of Nepali Muslims will find the truth of the one Muslims call the Prophet Isa! There is a lot of potential for gospel growth within the Shaikh community in Nepal because of relatively few social divisions.
Pray that the few Shaikh believers in Nepal will shine their lights for Jesus in such a way that others will see what true holiness is. Pray that they will eagerly teach others how to follow the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.
* Pray for spiritual hunger and a quest for truth among the Muslim Shaikhs of Nepal. * Pray for an unstoppable disciple-making movement to spread in their communities.
