The Khorat Thai people do not appear on most ethnographic lists of groups in Thailand because their language is only considered slightly different from standard Central Thai. They do, however, consider themselves a unique ethnic group. Despite being surrounded by Isan (Northeast Thai speakers), the Khorat Thai speak Central Thai. This sets them apart from their neighbors and creates a strong sense of group cohesion. Their older women dress differently than the Thai majority. At one time the Khorat Thai people supported themselves through hunting wild game. Today they are farmers.
The Khorat Thai people are officially Buddhist, but they are more concerned about pleasing their village spirits, the same ones that they believe control all local matters. Whoever goes to them will have to convince them that the God of Creation is actually sovereign, not the local spirits.
Believers can come to them, or ideally live with them while they learn their language and culture. Eventually, there will come a day when they need to have a power encounter, where they call on the Lord to do mighty things that the local spirits cannot duplicate. That will give entire villages the motivation to consider following Jesus.
Pray for Khorat Thai believers to be filled with both the fruit and the power of the Holy Spirit so they can demonstrate the goodness and power of the Lord to their Buddhist neighbors.
* Pray for a hunger and thirst for righteousness that will lead Khorat Thai people to put their faith in the One who rose from the dead and offers life to the full. * Pray for a movement of God’s blessing to flow through Khorat Thai families discussing and applying God’s Word.
