Russia is a large, multi-ethnic country. Among the several Caucasian peoples (that is, people of the Caucasus Mountains in Russia's southwest) are the Karata. They are one of dozens of people groups in the Western part of the Dagestan region, all of whom desperately need prayer. They practice folk Islam though they are officially from the more orthodox Sunni branch of Islam. The Karata live in 10 villages in the Needle's Eye region, and they take pride in their culture of "collective conformity." They are conservative and are proud of their traditions. In 1999, they sought to be independent of Russia, yet some 5,000 have fought against ISIS. They do not like anyone to tell them what to do, whether they are Russians or Islamic militants.
Terrain, language, independent mindset and religious conservatism are marked obstacles to reaching the Karata with the gospel, in addition to current Russian laws against proselytism.
Currently, the only limited outreach is the translation of the Lord's Prayer into Karata. They need a person of peace to open the way for the entrance of the gospel and they are highly suspicious of any outsiders.
"Let everything that has breath praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!" Psalm 150:6
May it be soon!
Pray that God would raise up witnesses and a person of peace who will be able to stay in Dagestan. Pray that veterans who have fought against ISIS would return with doubts about Islam. Pray for a positive response to the Lord's Prayer in Karata. Pray for a Disciple Making Movement among the Karata people this decade.
