Orang Negeri Minangkabau in Malaysia

pronounced: oh-RAHNG NEH-geh-ree mee-nahng-kah-BOW

As descendants from the Minangkabau people from West Sumatra, Indonesia, the Minangkabau of Malaysia have a distinct culture and their own royal line that dates back several centuries. The Minang place great emphasis on their women. In order to protect the rights of the female, the name and property are passed down through the line of the mother. The Minang are devout Muslims in spite of their matrilineal heritage. The practice of female inheritance and men being unable to take a second wife draws criticism from more fundamental Islamic people groups.

Ministry Obstacles

Malaysia does not provide easy access for Christian workers, and this people group is devoted to their current religion.

Outreach Ideas

The people feel that that their culture is in danger of dilution by outside influence. Efforts to share the gospel with them will need to be very sensitive to the preservation of this culture.

Scripture Focus

"Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!"  Psalm 150:6

Scripture Prayer

May it be soon!

Prayer Focus

Although there are likely no followers of Jesus Christ among the Minangkabau at this time, pray for the preparation of their hearts to receive those who will need to come with attitudes of patience and sensitivity. May the unique culture of the Minangkabau be preserved and blessed as a culture designed by the All-Compassionate One. Pray for preservation of the culture while accommodating the truth personified by Jesus.
