Pashtun, Pathan in India

The Pashtun are not a single tribe, but a collection of many tribes. There are at least 30 major tribes, and countless sub-tribes and clans. They are known for their marksmanship and their love of honor. They live by the Pashtun code known as Pushtunwali ("the way of the Pushtun") There have been efforts to reach the Pashtun since 1818, when William Carey translated parts of the Old Testament into Pakhto, based on interaction with Pashtun traders who caravanned (and settled) across north India and beyond.

Ministry Obstacles

Much prayer is needed, as the Pashtun fear that Christianity will turn individuals from their families and communities.

Outreach Ideas

A daftari is a man well respected in tribal councils and the greater Pashtun society. The "man of peace" may be found among this group of influential leaders to open the way for Pashtun households and communities to hear God's Word and experience God's blessing.

Pray for the followers of Christ

Pray that the few Pashtun believers will be fruitful and effective in helping their families and communities discover the blessing God's Word brings in healing and strengthening families and communities through Jesus Christ.

Pray for the entire people group

Pray that the Pashtun will understand that Jesus wants to bless Pashtun families and transform "the way of the Pushtun" rather than demolishing it. Pray for more workers to serve among the Pashtun people—in education, business, healthcare, development, and other professional areas!
