Though originating from the Oromo tribal clusters of Ethiopia, today the Southern Oromo reside only in neighboring Somalia. They exhibit group-oriented culture with authoritarian fathers and a male warrior tradition. Most live in rural areas where they make a living mainly from raising animals and farming.
The majority of Oromo people are Muslim; however, their traditional animistic religion is still practiced by most of the population. These people whom the Lord Jesus loves are in spiritual bondage on many fronts. In Somalia, they do not have the chance to hear that Jesus Christ offers them a better life.
Some Oromo people move to towns, drawn by employment and modern schooling opportunities. With better internet connection, they have some chance of hearing the gospel from online sources.
"Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise Him, all you people of the earth." Psalm 117:1
Pray that some from this people group will praise Him this year.
Their main language is Borana-Arsi-Guji Oromo. The entire Bible, various audio recordings, and the JESUS Film are available in that language. Pray for these resources to become easily available to them. Pray for workers to somehow become salt and light to Oromo communities in Somalia. Pray for a Disciple Making Movement among the Oromo people in Somalia.
