Bharbhunja (Hindu traditions) in India

pronounced: bar-BOON-jah

The Bharbhunja get their name from their traditional occupation of roasting grains. "Bharbhunja" means frying pan or one who roasts grain in Sanskrit. Some Bharbhunja claim they are descendants of Brahmin or Kshatriya, the two highest castes of Hinduism but other castes place them in the fourth or lowest caste of Shudras. The Bharbhunja buy grain from other agricultural castes, then roast or parch it to sell this grain to others. Besides roasting grain, the Bharbhunja own roadside restaurants, work as laborers and run small businesses. Some Bharbhunja have taken advantage of the Indian educational system and become professionals, physicians, teachers, and engineers.

Ministry Obstacles

When Bharbhunja persons become believers, they may lose business and be shunned by their Hindu family. That is a heavy price to pay; family is everything to a Hindu.

Outreach Ideas

The Bible and many resources exist in the main language that the Bharbhunja speak, Hindi. Hindu background believers can share with them the blessings of knowing Christ.

Scripture Focus

I will thank you, Lord, among all the people. I will sing your praises among the nations. Ps 108:3

Pray that God will raise up thankful people from among this people.

Prayer Focus

There are no known believers in Christ among the Bharbhunja at the present time. Pray that God brings many of them to Himself soon. * Pray the Lord sends workers to the Bharbhunja who will show them the love and mercy of Christ. * Pray that Indian believes would reach out to the Bharbhunja with the gospel. * Pray that the Lord wins many Bharbhunja to Himself and that Bible-believing churches begin among them.
