The Romani originated in northern India and fled to what is now Afghanistan to escape Muslim invaders, but later they became Muslims themselves! As is common among tribal peoples, their name, "Rom," means "human." In general, men make goods and women sell them. Theirs is a matriarchal society. They marry young and the bride is expected to be a virgin. They adopt the religion of the nearby majority people. Most Romani of Afghanistan speak two languages: their Domari language and Afghan Persian. Few have Afghan citizenship due to prejudice and cultural differences, and they cannot own property.
Nomadism works against evangelizing them, as does their low literacy rate, which limits ways to take them the gospel. They are often unwelcomed and distrusted, and they lack citizenship. Afghanistan is closed to missionaries and evangelism.
They need "tentmakers," medical workers and literacy teachers to point the way to Christ. They need personal evangelism and radio broadcasts in their heart languages.
"Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord? Who can ever praise him enough?" Psalm 106:2
May many from this people group not be able to praise Him enough!
Pray for tactful boldness and love among believers. Pray for spiritual growth and the development of leadership. Pray for radio broadcasts of Bible studies. Pray that they would become increasingly open to believers within their community. Pray that the Afghan government's refusal to recognize them with citizenship will open them to Kingdom citizenship. Pray that God would send them dreams and visions that will lead to movements to Christ.
