Dhobi (Hindu traditions) in India

The Dhobi are from the Dalit caste in India. That means they are considered "untouchables" by those from higher castes. They are not afforded the same opportunities for employment and education as other castes. Their livelihood is earned by washing clothes for people of castes above theirs. The whole family is usually involved in the process of providing this service. Most of the Dhobis follow popular Hinduism and worship local gods as well as the washing stones.

Ministry Obstacles

The perception that Christianity will turn individuals from their families and communities and promotes many social problems is a serious obstacle to Dhobi families and communities humbly accepting God's blessing for families through Jesus.

Outreach Ideas

Who does not need to have their clothes washed? Indian believers could make it a special point to reach out in love and with the truth to the ones who provide this crucial service across the entire country.

Pray for the followers of Christ

There are apparently a very small number of Dhobi who follow Jesus. Pray that they will be effective in demonstrating how Jesus blesses and heals families and communities.

Pray for the entire people group

Pray for a movement to Jesus among the Dhobi to heal and strengthen their families and communities, and to provide improved career and education opportunities. Pray they will not be forgotten by local representation and services.

Scripture Focus

"Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, The people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance." Psalm 33:12
