Lingayat in India

The Lingayat people are known for wearing a linga, an object representing a god; in this case, Shiva. This group formed in the 12th century by Basava, a philosopher and social reformer. He taught against the caste system and its regulations. He envisioned a casteless society, though the resulting society eventually began drawing up lines of caste distinctions again, creating their own hierarchy of social status after Basava's death. They are known to be a progressive people and there are people from many walks of life and religious expression to be found among them. They adore Shiva, but Basava taught that his worshipers should worship him alone rather than numerous gods. Lingayats reject polytheism and the Vedas and follow the teachings of the Vachana sahitya instead.

Ministry Obstacles

The Lingayat are a very large people group, and it will surely require many workers and many projects to effectively take the Gospel to the Lingayat.

Outreach Ideas

The Lingayat tend to believe in only one god, that is, they tend to be monotheists. If they were to learn this one god is in fact the God of the Bible that will be a major step toward believing in God's Son, Jesus Christ.

Pray for the followers of Christ

None of the Lingayat people are known to be followers of Jesus at this time, however there may be some secret believers in this large people group. Please pray for any Christians to be taught by God's Spirit and will learn to be real disciples of Christ.

Pray for the entire people group

Please pray the Lingayat will be given a clear understanding of who the one true God truly is, and not confuse him with a false god.
