The Sentinelese are one of the last truly isolated tribal groups on the planet. The Sentinelese live as their ancestors have for thousands of years as hunter gatherers on their island. They are animists who live in fear of offending evil spirits and the spirits of their ancestors. Several visitors to the island have been attacked and some killed by Sentinelese arrows. Anthropologists do not know how many Sentinelese there are, though guesses range from 100 to 500. Indian anthropologists have visited the group on numerous occasions, giving them gifts of pigs and coconuts.
The Indian government has strictly forbidden any contact with them. Due to their isolation, the Sentinelese lack any protection against modern diseases. An epidemic of flu or smallpox could wipe out the entire population. Our Lord is in the business of doing miracles. To bring the gospel to the Sentinelese will take a miracle because it is illegal to interact with them in any way.
Throughout history, isolated tribes have often held beliefs that parallel stories from the Bible or that predict the coming of the message of Jesus Christ. The Lord can make himself known to this people through dreams, visions or angelic visitations.
"Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—this is God, whose dwelling is holy." Psalm 68:5
May the widows and orphans among this people group become part of His family.
Pray that the tribe would be protected from natural disasters. The tsunami of 2004 could have devastated them, but they were able to find shelter. Pray the Sentinelese would come to follow God even as they are cut off from his messengers. Pray that the Indian government would allow Christian medical teams to come to the island with the necessary precautions.
