Kalwar (Hindu traditions) in India

pronounced: KAHL-wahr

The Kalwars were traditionally distillers and sellers of alcohol in north and central India. Their name comes from the Sanskrit word for "distiller of liquor." Since this profession was considered demeaning by most castes in Indian society, many Kalwars at the beginning of the 20th century began to leave their original trade for other careers. Although some of the Kalwars still are in the liquor business, most have taken jobs in agriculture, business, the military, government service, medicine, accounting, education, and engineering. The Kalwar speak the primary languages of the states where they live.

Ministry Obstacles

When Kalwars become believers, they may face a loss of business and being ostracized by their family. This may prevent many from turning to Jesus.

Outreach Ideas

Hindu background believers can share with the Kalwar the good news of the Savior. Workers can help the Kalwar learn new job skills so that their occupation will be more acceptable to Indian society.

Scripture Focus

I will praise the Lord at all times. I will constantly speak His praises. Ps 34:1

Scripture Prayer

May many from this people group praise Him at all times!

Prayer Focus

There are no known believers among the Kalwar. Pray that the Lord leads many Kalwar to knowledge of Himself. * Pray the Lord would send Indian believers to befriend and work with the Kalwars. * Pray that each Kalwar would have the opportunity to hear the gospel in an understandable way. * Pray the Lord would begin Bible-believing churches in the Kalwar community.
