Konkani Kunbi in India

pronounced: kohn-kuh-NEE KOON-bee

How many of you dread mouth and throat cancer? The Kunbi Konkani people often get it because they smoke homemade cigarettes. These are farmers, herdsmen or day laborers who belong to the low status Shudra caste. Konkani refers to the language of Goa, a small former Portuguese colony which is south of Gujarat and Maharashtra, two states where most Kunbi Konkani people now live. Many of them now speak other languages.
