Ambalavasi in India

The Ambalavasi community lived and worked near Hindu temples, so their name comes from "ambal," meaning temple and "vasi" meaning inmate. Most consider them Brahmins though their roles are even more complex than the Brahmins. They work in Hindu temples where they often serve as artists. Some are musicians or perform dramas. Others are storekeepers or provide flowers for the Hindu temples.

Ministry Obstacles

Their association with Hindu worship tends to close them off to the gospel as does their Brahmin status.

Outreach Ideas

People need to pray for them faithfully and take Bibles to the Ambalavasi community. Power encounters might open them to the God who performs miracles.

Scripture Focus

"Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,"  Hebrews 2:14

Scripture Prayer

Pray for today’s people group to escape the power of death and the devil and to flee to Jesus Christ.

Prayer Focus

Pray for the Indian church to witness directly to those associated with Hindu temples and for the church to distribute Scripture to Ambalvasis and show them how to know God personally. Pray that God would open Ambalvasi hearts and minds to be receptive to scripture and power encounters. Pray the Ambalvasi come to see religion is more than ritual and festivals; that they would long for a personal encounter with God. Pray for a movement to Christ this decade among the Ambalavasi people of India.
