Kirar in India

pronounced: kee-RAHR

The Kirar or Kirad are an agricultural people who live in central India. They claim to be descendants of Rajputs but other Rajputs do not accept them as belonging to their community. Their name comes from a village in Rajasthan where they originally lived before migrating across India. The Kirar live near riverbanks where they cultivate cotton, sugar cane, the grain sorghum, lentils, and other crops. They are considered a Backward Caste and are eligible for reserved places in public jobs and education. In a recent survey 80% of Kirar men were literate and only 50% of Kirar women could read and write.

Ministry Obstacles

Hinduism is ingrained into Kirar culture. Many of the Kirar are unable to read and write so the gospel must be presented in an oral form.

Outreach Ideas

Agricultural workers can help the Kirar increase their crop yield. Other workers can help the children learn to read and write and with the medical needs.

Scripture Focus

"Moses immediately threw himself to the ground and worshiped. And he said, “O Lord, if it is true that I have found favor with you, then please travel with us. Yes, this is a stubborn and rebellious people, but please forgive our iniquity and our sins."  Exodus 34:8-9

Scripture Prayer

Pray that members of this people group will soon have as rich an understanding of the need for God’s presence as Moses did.

Prayer Focus

There are presently no known believers among the Kirar. Ask the Lord to send Hindu background believers to share the good news with them. * Pray for a movement of Jesus to heal and strengthen Kirar communities. * Pray God softens the hearts of the Kirar so they might be open to hearing the claims of Christ. * Pray for God to win many Kirar to Himself and that Bible-believing churches are planted in their community.
