Shirazi in Tanzania

pronounced: shee-RAH-zee

Shirazi is a name used by some Africans who identify their heritage with the ancient Persian province, Shiraz. According to legend, a Persian prince from Shiraz had a nightmare that he interpreted as meaning that evil would soon destroy him, so he and others set sail, and eventually landed in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. The Shirazi people believe this prince is their ancestor. Shirazi people sometimes consider themselves a separate ethnic group from the Swahili peoples, though Swahili is their mother tongue.

Ministry Obstacles

The Shirazi people are Muslim, no one from their community has put their faith in Jesus Christ to the extent this is known. Anyone who took such a step would become an outcast, especially if the leader of their family did not approve.

Outreach Ideas

There are believers in Tanzania and nearby Kenya who can reach out to the Shirazi people. They would need to be sensitive to the culture, and make sure they work with the leaders.

Prayer Items

Since there are probably no followers of Christ among this people group, pray for a move of the Holy Spirit to draw many to take that step of faith. * Pray for the Shirazi people to understand and embrace that Jesus wants to bless their families and neighborhoods. * Pray for the Lord to open the hearts of Shirazi family leaders to experience God's blessing through a movement of discovery Bible studies. * Pray for a movement of Jesus to heal and strengthen Shirazi communities.
