Dhimar in India

pronounced: dee-MAHR

Dhimar people live mainly in the central provinces of India. Dhimar (fishermen) people are fishermen and palanquin (sedan chair) bearers. They also work as boatmen, workmen in cultivation along the river banks, water carriers, rope weavers, grindstone sharpeners, and sellers of sweet potatoes, dry grains, rice, and boiled plums. They are 100 percent Hindus.

Ministry Obstacles

Persecution levels vary widely from state to state, although strong laws are being passed in the central provinces limiting conversions. Central India remains a pioneer mission field, but outreach and response are increasing, reflecting persecution levels.

Outreach Ideas

Dhimar people are generally poor and have many physical and spiritual needs. Practical helps such as well digging, planting and harvesting gardens, medical, and occupational training afford many opportunities to reach in to the lives of these needy people. Their greatest need is for their Savior.

Prayer Items

There are no known followers of Christ within this people group. * Pray that these independent, resourceful, hard-working people will see their need for their Creator God, who loves them and gave His life for them. * Pray for a spiritual hunger that will drive Dhimar people into the arms of Jesus.
